What Will You Do as a Dental Assistant?

As a dental assistant, you will perform a variety of tasks to assist during treatment procedures, such as handing instruments and materials to the dentists and keeping the patients’ mouths dry and clear. You may also be responsible for sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and equipment, preparing trays of instruments for dental procedures, and instructing patients on postoperative and general oral health care.

In addition to office management and communications, records management and ethics, and an introduction to basic computer skills, you will have the opportunity to master skills in:

  • Chairside assisting, including handling dental instruments, controlling infection, and planning treatment in the eight specialty areas of dentistry
  • Handling dental emergencies, such as an abscessed tooth, alveolitis, or a broken tooth or prosthesis
  • Identifying structures of the oral cavity, the different types of teeth, and universal codes for each tooth
  • Performing dental radiology (if certified)* and safety procedures
  • Preventive dentistry, including coronal polishing, fluoride, and applying pit and fissure sealants†

 Career Opportunities 

When you graduate you could have the training you need to seek entry-level positions in private dental offices, group practices, public and private hospitals, clinics, dental insurance agencies, and related dental care services.

 Prepare for Certification 

The dental assistant program at Texas School of Business is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and is designed to prepare you for the required radiology certification exams.* If you choose to become nationally certified, you will need to take the Dental Assisting National Board's (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination to demonstrate competence in dental assisting skills. State regulations vary, and some states offer registration or licensure in addition to this national certification exam. In Texas, you must obtain certification in radiology from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to be qualified to perform dental x-rays.* Contact us for more information about our program or certification requirements.†

Program Requirements
